Spaarndam locks, pumping stations and forts route
Spaarndam, Haarlem, Lijnden
Our cycling route starts in Spaarndam, which is known for its rich history and pleasant atmosphere. Spaarndam lies on the Spaarne and once originated as a dam in the river. The village still has a charming appearance with old houses and narrow streets.
From here you cycle past special works of Rijnland such as pumping stations, locks and more. These works show how important water is in the Netherlands. Along the way you also pass impressive forts. These forts are part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a defensive line that once had to protect our country.
Enjoy the landscape, the stories and the surprises along the way. Get on your bike and discover how water and history come together in this unique route.
Everything lies within the management area of the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland, the oldest water authority in the Netherlands. Since 1255 Rijnland has been responsible for keeping feet dry and water clean in the area from Velsen and Amsterdam in the north to Wassenaar and Gouda in the south. Within the area there are pumping stations, locks and forts. On this route you get to know a number of these works.
