At the corner of the Noordzeekanaal and the Afrikahaven lies pumping station Houtrakpolder. The Houtrakpolder is part of the land reclaimed from the IJ by the Amsterdamsche Kanaalmaatschappij in the 1870s during the construction of the Noordzeekanaal.
The polder was originally drained by a steam pumping station, which was fitted with an electric motor in 1920. In 1935 this pumping station had to make way for the widening of the Noordzeekanaal and a new diesel pumping station was built several dozen metres further on in 1936. Due to the scarcity of fuel, an electric motor was installed in the pumping station in 1941.
