In 1975 the AWZI Haarlem Schalkwijk was built here, which was later expanded again in 1994. This AWZI has today been replaced by a wastewater transport pumping station or AWTG. The current treatment plant in Haarlem Schalkwijk is outdated and at the end of its lifespan. To continue treating wastewater from the region, two transport pumping stations have been built. The transport pumping stations pump the wastewater to the transport pipeline. Via the transport pipeline the wastewater goes to the renovated and expanded treatment plant in Zwanenburg.
