Next to the railway line between Haarlem and Amsterdam lies the Fort near the Liebrug. This fort is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. This was a defensive line of 135 kilometres long, consisting of more than 40 forts, constructed at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century to protect Amsterdam against enemy occupation. The Fort near the Liebrug was intended to defend the adjacent railway, the tow canal and the road between Amsterdam and Haarlem. After it was no longer needed as a defensive structure, the Fort near the Liebrug was used in the 1970s as a money depot and was given the nickname ‘Fort Knox’.
