The land around Spaarndam lies low. Without pumping stations the area would quickly become wet. Pumping station Waarder en Veer has long helped to prevent this. The pumping station Waarder en Veer was built in 2002. The station pumps water from the polders De Waarder and Het Veer. When there is a lot of rain, too much water enters ditches and canals. The pumping station pumps that water away to higher water, so that fields, roads and houses do not flood. The water is discharged into the Binnen Liede and the pumping station uses an electric motor for this. This polder pumping station, together with hundreds of other polder pumping stations, ensures dry feet in Rijnland.
