Cycling along the Mooie Nel path we ride past the Mooie Nel. Originally this lake was known as ‘Mooien Hel’. “Hel” in this context did not refer to the underworld, but to a “low lying area”, a marshy or water rich area, a meaning that still occurs in place names. Over time “Mooien Hel” changed into “Mooie Nel”, probably because of pronunciation and sound.
Beautiful it certainly is, because anglers, sailors and other water sports enthusiasts fully enjoy this place. The Mooie Nel is part of the Rijnland boezem. Rijnland is working on improving the water quality of the Mooie Nel by creating nature friendly banks and wave protection. These banks help to improve water quality and increase biodiversity.
