his fort is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. It once had an important task: defending the Slaperdijk and the Noorder Spaarne, together with the road that ran alongside it. If the area around the fort was flooded, an enemy could still try to enter here. The fort had to prevent that.

Construction of the fort began in 1885 and took a long time: it was only completed in 1901. Like Fort Benoorden Spaarndam, this was one of the first forts built of unreinforced concrete. At that time this was a new technique.

During the First World War, between 1914 and 1918, as many as 177 soldiers stayed in the fort. They had to be ready to defend the area.

The fort is part of a clever defence system. In case of danger, large areas of land could be flooded. This made it almost impossible for enemies to advance.

Today the fort is a silent witness to this special history.
