At the end of the Boezemkanaal lies a special discharge sluice. This canal was specially constructed for the pumping station of Spaarndam. The sluice connects the Boezemkanaal with the IJ and ensures that water can flow through.
The sluice has two openings that can be closed with wooden mitre gates. These gates are special because they can hold back the water from both sides. In the 19th century this was a clever solution to keep out high water. Moreover, they are made of wood, a material that is strong and durable and resistant to water.
The Boezemsluis has existed since 1843. At that time it was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a defensive line that was meant to protect our country. Now it is a beautiful piece of history that you can admire along the way.
