The first Grote Haarlemmerluis was built in 1569. Before that, ships could only reach the IJ via the Kolksluis or the Kleine Haarlemmersluis. Through the Grote Sluis, larger ships could also make the crossing from the Spaarne.
Since the 16th century, the Grote Sluis has been replaced and modernised several times. The first major changes took place in the 19th century. In 1804, for example, the lock was moved 30 metres to the west. It was renewed again in 1898 and as a result the Kleine Haarlemmersluis was filled in.
In 1927, the lock took over the role of the Kolksluis as the primary lock at Spaarndam. The current lock was built between 2009 and 2011 and provides access to Zijkanaal C and, ultimately, the Noordzeekanaal.
