Statue The Destroyed City - Rotterdam

N 51.9176032 / E 4.4829641

One of the best-known works of art in the Netherlands is Ossip Zadkine's Destroyed City. In 1946, the artist rode the train into Rotterdam, which was still in ruins from the violence of war. It was a poignant experience that inspired him to create this sculpture.

The sculpture depicts a distraught figure, raising its arms and face to the sky. The hole in the trunk symbolises the bombing on 14 May 1940, which destroyed the heart of the city.
