Sheep pen Holtinger Sheep herd - Havelte

N 52.7727981 / E 6.2322833

In 1838 there were 2900 sheep in the municipality of Havelte. They were mainly needed for the production of manure and the fact that they also supplied wool was a bonus. But there was fertilizer, so the number of herds drastically decreased. In 1950 the municipality bought a small flock of sheep for folkloric reasons, which was abandoned in 1958 due to a lack of a good shepherd. The foundation of the Stichting Holtinge in 1960 prevented the sheep from disappearing from Havelte. Photo: (c) Natuurmonumenten.
