Munsterkerk - Roermond

N 51.1935591 / E 5.9885161

The Munsterkerk was founded around 1218 by Count Gerard III van Gelre. Because the church was also intended as a tomb for the count and his wife, Margaretha van Brabant, the church got a more powerful appearance than usual. The young Pierre Cuijpers was commissioned in 1850 to restore part of the church. Apparently he liked it, because in 1863 he was commissioned to carry out a large-scale restoration. Among other things, the octagonal towers were replaced by square towers. Even though the design was carried out, it generated so much comment that Pierre moved to Amsterdam.
