Leuvenumse forest - Ermelo
Enjoy a varied area in the Leuvenumse forest: there is coniferous and deciduous woodland, a large sand drift, heathland and the Leuvenumse brook meanders its way through this area. This brook is the longest brook in the Veluwe, although it changes its name at the Veluwemeer coast to the Hierden brook. Hulshorsterzand is the Dutch Sahara, so go on an expedition in this special nature reserve. In the forests, the sand is actually held by trees that were planted around 1900 to prevent drifting sand. Watch out for overhanging dung beetles that have a busy day's work to do with the dung from the wildlife present. If you cycle through this area in the morning or evening twilight you have a chance of spotting red deer or wild boar. The fact that boars live here can often be seen on the rough ground next to the cycle path.
