Fort Uitermeer - Weesp

N 52.2937599 / E 5.0829888

At Fort Uitermeer a small harbour has been constructed with nine berths for sloops plus a kayak pier. The fort is part of the 'Gooi, Vecht and Loosdrechtse Plassen' boat network (junction 46) and is a special place to moor. The fort is freely accessible. Enjoy the beautiful nature (with dotter flowers in spring and a rare summer bell) and the consolidated tower fort overlooking the Vecht. The fort has a long history, which goes back to the beginning of the Eighty Years' War. Even before 1589, there must have been a ramp here with the name Uitermeer (Uitermeer lake). Later on, an earthen fort and even later the bombproof tower fort came into being. The fort protected the lock, the 's-Gravelandse Vaart, roads and railway. The ruin of the tower is rare because only ten bombproof towers remain in the Netherlands. It is the only one that has been preserved as a ruin. Fort Uitermeer is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The walking route 'Rondje Naardermeer' also passes this fort. The aerial photo was taken by Stichting Aquarius, the other pictures by Kenneth Stamp. Unfortunately, the hospitality industry of Fort Uitermeer was recently burned down and therefore not available for an indefinite period.
