Castle De Hooge Vuursche - Baarn

In the so called Laagte van Pijnenburg lies the hamlet of Vuursche, which is a lower part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Besides De Hoge Vuursche, there is also De Lage Vuursche. The name would come from the place name and refer to the poisonous gorse. This shrub was once common in the woody poor sandy soil.

In the 19th century, De Hoge Vuursche was the property of Louise Rutgers van Rozenburg. After her death, the widower Johannes A. van den Bosch commissioned the architect Eduard Cuypers (known for the station building in Den Bosch) to build the current complex. Because of his maritime interests, the house is provided with many ornaments related to shipping.

In 1975, the castle was bought by Heineken, who used it as a training location for commercial employees. After the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken in 1983, one wing was fitted with bullet-proof material, making it a safehouse.

Today, the castle can be rented as a wedding and party location.
