Harbour route through Smallingerland
Oudega, Eernewoude, Garijp
The area around Earnewâld is known as one of the most beautiful water sports regions of Friesland. Between lakes, reed lands and waterways lies National Park De Alde Feanen: a unique low peat marsh where nature, water and Frisian culture come together.
This cycling route starts in Earnewâld and takes you past several marinas, such as marina Earnewald and marina Westerdijk. Here you can see how water still plays a central role in the daily life of the village. In the Skûtsjemuseum you discover the history of the famous Frisian skûtsjes: traditional sailing ships that were once used to transport cargo through the province.
Via Garijp and a short stretch of Burgum you cycle along De Leien, a popular lake for sailors and water sports enthusiasts. The route continues towards Opeinde and Oudega, where you once again pass the water and cycle past the marina of Oudega.
Along the way open water, Frisian villages and wide landscapes alternate with each other. Stop at a harbour, enjoy the view over the lake or take a seat on a terrace by the water. A relaxed route in which Friesland shows itself at its most beautiful.
