Veenendaal, Rhenen, Elst

Part of World War II was the Battle of Grebbeberg. This battle is known for the fierce fighting between the German and the Dutch military. East of Rhenen was the Grebbelinie where the Dutch army (2,500 soldiers) tried with all its might to stop the German army (23,000 soldiers). This German attack took place on May 11, 1940, what followed was a bloody battle around the Grebbeberg. For three days the Dutch soldiers held out and on day four the Grebbeline was cleared. 382 Dutch soldiers and 259 German soldiers died during this battle.

You start this cycle route in Veenendaal and cycle through the beautiful nature of the National Park over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug towards Rhenen. Here you will find several places that were important during the Battle of Grebbelinie. Take a break at Hugo's Pancakes, so that you have enough energy to continue this route. After all, you have to pedal hard every now and then during this ride. But a little climbing makes for a beautiful ride: there is no lack of nature and history here!
