Cycle route Waterland above Amsterdam

Broek in Waterland, Monnickendam, Purmerend
Above Amsterdam lies a beautiful water-rich area. The lakes, ditches, meadows and picturesque villages alternate here, creating beautiful scenes.
Purmerend was still a small hamlet in 1340, but has flourished as a trading centre for fishing and shipping. The town once had a castle, Purmersteijn Castle, built at the beginning of the 15th century. After it fell into disrepair, it was demolished in 1741.
Along the way, you will pass Broek in Waterland, also known as Broek by the locals. The village is beautiful and attracts many visitors with its brightly coloured wooden houses. Between the water, you will find the village of Landsmeer, which often lost the battle against the water. Now you can hop off here safely to visit the Twiske nature reserve, for example!
