Cycle route to the Dinkel Valley
Hoogstede, Neuenhaus, Ootmarsum
Take a scenic ride from the point where the Dinkel flows into the Vechte near Neuenhaus to the stunning Dinkel Valley near Ootmarsum in Twente. You’ll cycle through gently rolling countryside along this winding river, which originates just above Coesfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia. In Twente, the Dinkel crosses into the Netherlands, only to cross back again near Lattrop.
The area near Lattrop is one of the most beautiful stretches of the river. Here, the Dinkel still flows much as it did during the penultimate ice age. Alongside the flowing water, you’ll also enjoy the characteristic "essen", historic farmland on higher ground. Highlights here include Huis te Breckelenkamp and the Boombakspieker.
Along the Dinkel, you’ll also find a series of special artworks called the Dinkelsteine. There are 25 in total, scattered along the river, and you’ll pass four of them on this route. The old watermills add an authentic charm to this riverside tour. A perfect blend of nature, culture and history!
