Cycle route Taste and feel history
Drunen, Heusden, Vught
Drunen is part of a region called the Langstraat, historically known for its leather and shoe industry. On 1 January 1997, the municipalities of Drunen, Vlijmen and Heusden merged into the new municipality of Heusden. With the fortified town of Heusden, National Park Loonse and Drunense Duinen and the river Maas, the municipality of Heusden has several major tourist attractions.
But there is much more to do in Heusden. Think of the many beautiful routes along dikes and through polders, or the wonderful nature areas such as the Vlijmens Ven and the Haarsteegse Wiel. In the High Middle Ages the manorial rights of Vlijmen were in the hands of the Lord of Heusden, who was a vassal of the Duke of Brabant. In 1334 he sold these rights to the Counts of Holland, bringing Vlijmen under the County of Holland. Despite this, Vlijmen remained largely Catholic.
