Hierden, Hulshorst

On this cycle route, you will discover many sandy places. Alongside the water, you will cycle along various little beaches. Park your bike for a while to build a cool sandcastle! On a warm day, do not forget to bring your swimming gear, because you can swim and play in the Veluwe lake. Swans have also found their home at the lake. All year round, the swans are floating on the water and you can see them grazing in the meadows here and there.

You cycle through the meadows to Hierden. Farms are situated on rural roads lined with tall trees, with all sorts of animals in the surrounding meadows. From cows to horses! Gradually, you see more and more trees along the road. That's right, you are getting closer to the forest. Then, suddenly, there is a high cycle bridge. A steep climb that not only crosses the motorway, but also the train tracks. Fortunately, on the other side of the bridge, you can whizz downhill and cycle straight into nature, on your way to the sand drifts.

You will encounter no less than two shifting sand areas: the Beekhuizerzand and the Hulshorsterzand. There are few such areas in the Netherlands, so these on the Veluwe are very valuable for nature. When you park your bike, you can climb the dunes to look out over the Dutch deserts. And do you know what you can do best from sand dunes? Roll down them of course! More fun can also be found at the Stakenberg, where a playground with a cable slide is hidden between the heather.

Via the small village of Hulshorst, you cycle towards the water of the Veluwe lake. And, how many swans did you count along the way?
