Cycle route safari at Planken Wambuis

Otterlo, Hoenderloo, Deelen
You won’t easily come across the Big Five on this safari – but do keep an eye out for other wild animals, like a rooting wild boar or a red deer dashing past.
Feeling a little nervous about that idea? No problem – you can also spot wildlife from a safe distance. Climb up to the viewpoint at Planken Wambuis. Our tip: bring binoculars!
The route continues through the Deelerwoud – a vast and peaceful area where heathlands and ancient forests blend into each other. The paths wind gently through rolling hills and open clearings. There’s a good chance of seeing wildlife here, and you might spot some special bird species too. This quiet landscape attracts animals that are hard to find elsewhere. Forest and heath fade into one another without sharp borders – it’s as if the landscape is in no hurry at all.
Near Deelen, the surroundings gradually shift from natural to historic. Hidden traces of the area's military past lie tucked away in the forest. Further north, in the Hoge Veluwe National Park, the famous hunting lodge by architect Berlage emerges from the greenery – symmetrical, serene, and exactly where it belongs.
