Cycle route Gouda and the Hollandse IJssel
Gouda, Moordrecht, Ouderkerk aan den IJssel
This cycle route takes you along one of the most beautiful rivers in South Holland: the Hollandse IJssel. You start in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and follow the water towards the historic city of Gouda. Along the way you cycle through typical Dutch landscapes with green meadows, dikes and quiet villages.
The Hollandse IJssel used to play a major role in this region. Goods such as cheese, peat and beer were transported over the water. Thanks to this river, towns were able to grow and prosper. As you cycle, you are in fact following an old trade route.
Gouda is one of the towns that benefited greatly from the river, and is the centre of your route today. Here the river Gouwe flows into the Hollandse IJssel. You experience the rich history of the city. Gouda is world famous for its Gouda cheese and delicious syrup waffles. In the charming town centre you will find beautiful historic buildings, such as the old town hall and the impressive St John’s Church with its colourful windows.
After visiting Gouda, you cross to the south side of the Hollandse IJssel and continue your route along the water. This section is often quieter and offers lovely views over the river and the surrounding landscape.
At Ouderkerk aan den IJssel you take the ferry with your bike. This short trip across the water is a fun and typically Dutch moment during your route. On the other side you cycle back towards Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, where your loop ends.
