Cycle route Frisian States and Stinzen
Leeuwarden, Hardegarijp, Oenkerk
Around Leeuwarden you see many beautiful historic houses with impressive estates, which are called states here. During this cycling route you pass a number of special locations, such as Popta Slot, Dekemastate, Staniastate and country estate De Klinze.
These buildings radiate a special charm and allure. Each one tells a story from the past, when wealthy families lived here and left their mark on the surroundings.
Popta Slot in Marsum, also known as the Poptastate, is one of the best preserved manor houses of Friesland. This stately house, built in the 16th century, is surrounded by a moat and has a beautiful garden. Today it is a museum where you can experience what life looked like at the time.
Dekemastate in Jelsum is an impressive state with a history dating back to the 14th century. The current house, surrounded by a park in English landscape style, is a paradise for lovers of culture and history. Here you can walk through the park and enjoy a beautifully restored historic garden, with beautiful flowers and plants that enhance the heritage.
The gardens of these locations deserve extra attention. Some were designed by the well known landscape architect Roodbaard, who left a major mark on the Frisian landscape in the 19th century. His designs are characterised by winding paths, water features and natural looking planting, giving the gardens not only a sense of calm, but also a timeless beauty.
