Nieuw-Vossemeer, Sint Philipsland, Sint-Annaland

The Dutch province of Zeeland has had a love hate relationship with water since time immemorial. In the course of its history Zeeland owes its current shape and soil composition to the many floods that have ravaged the area. The most recent is still fresh in the memory of many: the flood disaster of 1953, which also left deep traces on the island of Tholen and in the province of Brabant.
After the completion of the Delta Works this defence system nowadays provides sufficient protection against the high water of the sea.

That Zeeland and Brabant are rich in water you notice immediately in the surroundings. The landscape is characterised by an enormous wide view, with picturesque church towers on the horizon and along the Krabbenkreek the regularly drying out sandbanks. Neither land, nor water. It typifies the everlasting struggle against the water and emphasises the identity of the island of Tholen and the western part of North Brabant. A special transition area that is extremely interesting for breeding and foraging birds.

The National Park Oosterschelde stretches via the Krabbenkreek to Sint-Philipsland. The park harbours a flora and fauna unique for the Netherlands. In the Oosterschelde porpoises and seals regularly show themselves and countless birds find their food here. Sport divers explore the rich underwater life, water sports enthusiasts indulge themselves there and cyclists and walkers marvel at the view of the horizon, the characteristic mills and the tranquillity of nature.
