Cycle route Enjoy at Gieten
Stadskanaal, Gieten
The route leads you through beautiful nature, peat areas and via the river Hunze to Gieten. This village lies on the border of beautiful forests and heathland. The coat of arms of Gieten shows a leaping greyhound, which is why the windmill from 1833 has been given the name ‘De Hazewind’.
The name Stadskanaal originated when in 1765 the municipal council of Groningen decided to have a canal dug: the canal of the city. Along this canal new residential areas arose which together formed the town of Stadskanaal.
The area can not only be explored by bike, but also by rail. Once you arrive in Stadskanaal, you pass the Museum railway S.T.A.R. With the historic steam trains you can travel to Musselkanaal and Veendam.
Gieten and surroundings, pure enjoyment.
