Cycle route Architecture in the Wieringermeer
Wieringerwerf, Slootdorp, Den Oever
This cycle route is being developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Hollands Kroon. During Open Monument Day on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September 2025, this cycling route will be opened. Will you be there?
Get on your bike and discover the Wieringermeer, a polder that was not only reclaimed from water, but also from vision. Where the Zuiderzee once lay, a completely new landscape arose in the 1930s. Sleek, purposeful and progressive. The architecture of this polder tells the story of a country that reinvented itself.
Cycle past monumental farms, village centres and the memories of war and reconstruction. The straight lines and symmetrical farmyards are no coincidence, but the result of a well-thought-out plan. Here, you see how ideals and landscape merge into an architecture that exudes peace and order.
Along the way, you feel the spirit of the pioneers who made this area habitable, but also the resilience of a community that started again after the 1945 dyke breach. The Wieringermeer is no ordinary polder. It is a living monument to feasibility, modernity and human perseverance.
At each stop-off point, you can listen to an audio clip. So while viewing the beautiful buildings, you can also listen to the stories. Let yourself be surprised by the beauty of simplicity. And those who look closely will see that behind every façade lies a story.
Attention! There are many country roads on this route where agricultural vehicles operate. For your safety, it is therefore important to make sure you are clearly visible.
