Cycle route along the Brabant asparagus
Loon op Zand, Vught, Boxtel
The queen of vegetables and one of the last real Dutch seasonal vegetables: asparagus. Asparagus is mainly grown in Noord-Brabant and Limburg and is a very healthy vegetable. Asparagus is rich in vitamin K and C, and a source of folate.
The Dutch asparagus season traditionally runs from April to the holiday of Sint Jan (24 June). During this period, the chance of tasty asparagus is greatest. The end of the asparagus season falls on this exact date because after this it still takes 100 days until the first frost, an important guideline for farmers.
Many asparagus farmers have their own farm shop where you can buy asparagus from their own land. They are happy to tell you how to prepare their favourite asparagus dish. So hop on your bike and discover the white gold.
And are you cycling outside the asparagus season? Then it is still a beautiful cycle route. What about forts, castles and the vast nature of the Loonse and Drunense Duinen? Plenty to discover.
