Middelburg, Arnemuiden, Vlissingen

This cycle route takes you through the beautiful historic centres of Middelburg, Vlissingen and Arnemuiden. With Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, as the lively heart of the route, you’re in for a great ride.

Monumental buildings tucked away in cosy little alleys, inviting terraces and small boutiques give the city an intimate charm. Every now and then you’ll hear the carillon from the stunning town hall. The canals tie it all together perfectly.

'Three times is a charm', they must have thought in Arnemuiden. After the little town was swallowed up by the Arne twice in 1440 and 1460, Arnemuiden was founded for the third time in 1462. And with success, Arnemuiden is still there today. Although Alva tried to destroy the city during the Eighty Years' War...

Through a landscape full of waterways, you arrive in Vlissingen, situated on the Westerschelde. The town is one of the seventeen protected townscapes in Zeeland and has more than 300 monuments. Cycle along the boulevard and look out over the beaches. Also take a look at the Vlissingen wind organ on the south pier. This organ consists of bamboo pipes. If the wind blows hard enough, it will sound through the organ as if a choir is singing. Vlissingen is a city with a rich maritime past.
