Cycle route along Boniface
Dokkum, Burgum, Damwâld
The theme of this cycle route is all about Boniface, a saint from history. Wynfreth, as Boniface was originally named, was one of the most important Anglo-Saxon missionaries and church reformers in the Frankish Empire. On 5 June 754, he was brutally murdered with clubs during a missionary journey.
Long after his death, the Boniface Chapel was built on the site of his martyrdom in the Frisian city of Dokkum. Add this chapel to your route for a visit. In Dokkum, you can also visit the city museum to learn even more about the rich history of this Frisian town.
From Burgum, you’ll cycle through a beautiful, rural part of Friesland. Along the way, you’ll pass small villages and local (farm) shops where you can buy fresh products. Before reaching Dokkum again, you’ll pass the Bruinenberg nature museum and picturesque waterscapes. This combination makes the route especially pleasant: a peaceful setting with plenty of interesting spots to explore.
