Cycle route along Boniface

Dokkum, Burgum, Damwâld
This cycle route is entirely themed around Boniface, a historical saint. Wynfreth, as Boniface was called at birth, was one of the most important Anglo-Saxon missionaries and church reformers in the Frankish Empire. On 5 June 754 he was gruesomely killed by blows to the head during a missionary journey. Long after his death, the Boniface Chapel was built on the site of his martyrdom, in the Frisian city of Dokkum. Add this special stop to your route to learn more about the history and to visit the chapel.
From your starting point in Burgum, you cycle through the beautiful rural landscape of Friesland. Along the way, you’ll pass small villages and local (farm) shops selling fresh produce. Before reaching Dokkum, you ride past the Bruinenberg nature museum and scenic waterways. This combination makes the route especially enjoyable – a peaceful setting with plenty of interesting places to explore en route.
After passing the Mearmin mill, you arrive in Dokkum. Here you can visit not only the Boniface Chapel, but also take a look inside Museum Dokkum. After your visit, you can prepare for the return ride to Burgum.
