Cycle route across Ermelo Heath
Garderen, Ermelo, Speuld
Today, you’ll discover not one, but two stunning heathlands on the northern Veluwe: Ermelo Heath and the lesser-known Speulder and Houtdorp Heath.
You start in the forests of Garderen, where cycling is already a pleasure. As you reach the forest edge, the trees give way to a wonderfully open landscape. A gently rolling purple carpet, dotted with the occasional tree and criss-crossed by cycling and walking paths. This creates a pleasant variety along the route.
The heath has been maintained for centuries through grazing. Sheep still play an important role in this. At the Ermelo Sheepfold, you can see this up close, and with a bit of luck you may encounter the flock along the way. A little further on, you pass Staverden Estate, a surprisingly green and historic part of the Veluwe with grand avenues and a rich history.
