The municipality of Waterland lies between water and meadows, just outside Amsterdam. This municipality north of the capital consists of nine characteristic villages: Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam, Katwoude, Marken, Monnickendam, Overleek, Uitdam, Watergang and Zuiderwoude. All are easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam Central Station.
Almost half of Waterland's total area consists of water. The rural area is so unique that it has been designated a National Landscape by the national government because of its special cultural-historical value, nature and scenic beauty.
Marken, the most famous village in the municipality, has been attracting tourists for many years. This former island is known for its characteristic wooden houses and colourful traditional costumes. Since 1957, Marken has been connected to Monnickendam by a dyke.
Marken is characterised by its werven: artificial hills on which houses were built to protect them from flooding.
When these wharves became fully built up, residents began to place houses on stilts. Today, Marken still has fifteen wharves, twelve of which are inhabited. The small wooden houses are often close together, connected by narrow alleys and drawbridges. A walk along the wharves allows you to fully experience the unique atmosphere and charm of Marken.
