This water mill was built in 1725 as a paper mill. But making paper yielded less and less, so the owner Meyer had a second mill built. Chicory was roasted here, a substitute for coffee for people who could not afford real coffee. In 1860 the son of the owner converted the mill into a corn mill.
In 1916 Jannes Bels bought both mills. The paper mill (the one on the right) was also converted to a corn mill. The upper wheel was replaced by a turbine. The mill still owes its name to the Bels family.
In 1957, the Overijssels Landscape Foundation bought the mills, farms and surrounding land and the buildings were thoroughly restored. A tearoom was established in the main building, which has now developed into a full restaurant. The outbuilding is used as an exhibition space about mills in Overijssel.
