At the Voldersgracht, the fabrics that had been approved in the Wanthuis and shrunk after drying were stretched again and marked with a seal. This process, fulling or felting, was carried out by a “volder” or “fuller”. It was hard and dirty work, and it was poorly paid. This regularly led to strikes among the fullers.
The Voldersgracht runs from the Markt, where the Wanthuis was located and where the fabrics were inspected, to the Vrouwjuttenland. The waste products left behind by the cloth industry, such as fuller's earth and urine, ended up in the canal. The fabrics were then further processed at the Verwersdijk, where they were dyed and marked with their final lead seal, a quality mark with the coat of arms of Delft.
