The villas at Gemeenelandsweg 8 and 12 in Hippolytushoef are two striking buildings with an interesting history, closely linked to the reclamation of the Wieringermeer - an important part of the Zuiderzee Works.
Both villas were built in 1927-1928 on behalf of the Maatschappij ter Uitvoering van de Zuiderzeewerken (MUZ). They served as official residences for important executives working on this large-scale project. The designs are attributed to Professor Zwiers, who designed several other executive villas for Zuiderzeewerken in a very recognisable style.
The villa, called “De Haven”, was built for engineer Vetter. The house, called “Villa Zuiderzeewerken”, was built for Mr De Neef. The detached villas are examples of the rich rural-style villa construction of the 1920s. Characteristic features are the thatched hipped roof and the expressionist elements.
Both villas are of general cultural and architectural historical interest as well-preserved examples of executive villas built as part of the Zuiderzee Works. They bear witness to the scale and importance of this project and the way in which senior staff were housed. Both villas are listed buildings.
