The Village Church in Hoog-Keppel is one of the oldest churches in the region. Since the 11th century, the church has been the heart of the village. The oldest part of the building is constructed from tuff stone, a volcanic rock commonly used for churches at that time. It is one of the few remaining examples of Romanesque architecture in the Netherlands.
In the 14th century, the church was expanded with a Gothic addition, recognizable by a brick choir added to the original Romanesque nave. The combination of architectural styles is quite special.
A century later, the church received its tower. The spire has been modified several times over the centuries. The wooden barrel vaults and simple, austere interior reflect the Reformed tradition.
The Village Church has been designated as a national monument. The church square is also a charming sight, thanks to the old linden trees and historic houses. The church is still in use today.
