The Kops Plateau is a moraine along Het Meertje, a tributary of the Waal. The area was named after a farm that stood on the edge near the Groote Kop: the Kopse Hof. The old bakehouse of the farm can still be seen. Near the Kopse Hof, you will find a beautiful panoramic viewpoint.
The moraine appears to be of great archaeological value. In the first century AD, the Kops Plateau served as a military headquarters. It was used by high-ranking officers of the Roman army, possibly the commanders of the legions stationed in Nijmegen. The plateau offered an excellent strategic overview of the surrounding landscape and waterways, making it an ideal location for coordinating military operations.
The Roman camp on the Kops Plateau was relatively small but well organised. Archaeological finds showed that the camp was equipped with wooden buildings such as barracks and dwellings, open spaces, canals and a rampart.
What made the Kops Plateau special is the evidence of luxury. Archaeologists have found traces of an exceptionally richly furnished Praetorium, the commander's residence. This indicates that the plateau not only had a military function but also served as a residence for high-ranking Roman officers, possibly with distinguished guests. Among other things, imported pottery, glassware and even remains of frescoes have been excavated.
The original camp has disappeared. On the Kops Plateau, you can still recognise the contours of the site. Information panels provide information and an insight into what it must have looked like at the time.
