The Duivelsberg is a unique nature area on the steep northeastern slope of the Nijmegen moraine ridge, close to the border with Germany. With its height of 76 metres, the hill offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscapes. But you’ll also find rich biodiversity and traces from the distant past.

The area consists of ancient deciduous forest with more than 400 plant species, including rare ones such as orchids, giant horsetail, black rampion, touch-me-not balsam and pendulous sedge. In addition, the Duivelsberg is home to various rare animal species. Great crested newts, alpine newts, slow worms, several kinds of martens and yellow wagtails all live here.

On the Duivelsberg are the remains of the motte-and-bailey castle Mergelpe, a medieval fort from the 11th century. The castle was probably built around 1012 by Count Balderik and his wife Adela. It consisted of two earthen mounds (mottes) on which wooden fortifications once stood. The site was strategically chosen because of the view over the floodplains of the Waal.

From the viewpoint on the Duivelsberg, you have a spectacular view over the lower-lying Ooijpolder and the German region called De Duffelt. On a clear day, you can even see Arnhem, Montferland and parts of Germany.
