This viewing hill in the middle of the Dalum‑Wietmarscher Moor nature reserve is both literally and figuratively a highlight: it overlooks a landscape that was once heavily exploited and is now being restored. The area is part of the larger raised bog complex of the Bourtanger Moor and was designated a protected nature reserve in 2008.
From the 1930s through the post-war years, this peatland was cultivated. Hidden in the landscape are drainage lines and the plough marks left behind from peat cutting.
Now, you can enjoy sweeping views of the open land, the former peat layers and the return of nature to this moorland. You’ll see meadows, bird habitats, pools and marshes.
