The Wolderwijd is one of the border lakes that originated during the reclamation of the Zuiderzee. In recent years a beautiful and lively boulevard has been developed here. It is a particularly popular area for tourists and water sports enthusiasts, but it also offers plenty of space for nature.
Sometimes you may even be surprised by a special bathing guest: the flamingo. This exotic bird has been spotted here several times, especially during the winter period. The birds belong to a group of flamingos that breed in Germany. After the breeding season they move across the Netherlands, where they sometimes pause in the border lakes near Harderwijk.
By now the flamingos can again be called ‘wild’, but their ancestors were most likely escaped birds from bird parks.
