The current Verwolde house, whose name refers to the wooded surroundings, was built in 1776 as a mansion on the site of a medieval predecessor. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the house was almost completely destroyed during a siege. According to reports of the event, Verwolde was protected by no fewer than three moats. However, this did not prevent a tragic outcome. A new castle was built, but this too was destroyed. With the construction of the house in 1776, Verwolde took on its permanent form, after centuries of struggle, loss and repeated new beginnings.
The orangery next to Huis Verwolde houses a tea room and the castle shop. From April to October, you can enjoy all kinds of delicacies from Wereldbakker Wijnand in Laren in this tea room. In the castle shop, you can discover more about the castle and buy various local products.
