Twickel Estate, located near Delden, is one of the largest private estates in the Netherlands and covers approximately 4,300 hectares. The landscape is characterised by a variety of rolling fields, meadows, forests with ancient oak trees, heathland, fens, streams and hedgerows. Scattered across the estate are around 150 farms, recognisable by their black and white shutters, as well as two water mills, a water tower and a sawmill.
At the centre of the estate stands the moated Twickel Castle, the oldest parts of which date back to the 16th century. The castle is still inhabited and is managed by the Twickel Foundation, which is committed to preserving the estate as a natural and cultural monument.
Visitors can enjoy the extensive castle gardens, including an orangery, rock garden and a walled vegetable garden where vegetables, fruit and flowers are grown using traditional methods. The estate is largely accessible to walkers and cyclists, with several marked routes.
