The Warken Mill | Bakery Museum - Warnsveld

N 52.146903 / E 6.278698

The mill was built on a natural elevation in 1878. In 1899, a petroleum engine was purchased, which could drive a pair of grinding stones from a built-in engine room. In 1922, an engine room was installed outside the mill with a crude oil engine that drove the grinding stones from below.

Gradually, mechanical milling took over from the wind. Except for the war time of 1940 - 1945, when the windmill came to a standstill.

While you're at the mill, be sure to check out the grounds around it. You will notice a crazy lump in the grass here: the historic potato cellar. This cellar was probably built in the same year as the mill, but it could also be older. The potato cellar is now a national monument.

In 2008, the baker's house near the mill was rebuilt and the original bread oven threatened to disappear from it. Fortunately, it was preserved and is now part of a small Bakkersmuseum, located near the mill. The oven is still fired with bundles of branches. You can taste and buy the delicacies in the old-fashioned bakery shop.
