Just outside the centre of Ommen lies Landgoed Het Laer, a stately estate with a long history. At the heart of the grounds stands Huize Het Laer, a whitewashed manor house in neoclassical style. The current house dates from the 18th century, but the estate itself was first mentioned in the 14th century as property of a Utrecht nobleman.
Over time, the house was rebuilt and extended, including by noble families such as Van Rechteren. Surrounding the house is a landscaped park with straight avenues, canals, fishing ponds and old trees. The garden layout is largely intact, including a classical sightline and a large body of water, once designed as a ‘grand canal’.
