In 1883, Vincent van Gogh stayed in Drenthe, searching for inspiration in the rural life and landscapes of the region. This visit left a lasting mark on his artistic development.
On November 1st that year, Van Gogh made a day trip to Zweeloo, which deeply impressed him. He was especially struck by the colourful surroundings and wrote about it to his brother Theo.
The church here appears in the sketches Van Gogh made that day. He drew the Reformed Church of Zweeloo with a shepherd and flock in the foreground. The scene reminded him of Jean-François Millet’s painting L’Église de Gréville. In Zweeloo, he also sketched an apple orchard and a distinctive linden tree, which can still be seen in the village today.
