At the northern tip of Texel, near De Cocksdorp, stands the Eierland Lighthouse. Since 1864, it has warned ships of the treacherous sandbanks along the coast. During World War II, the tower was badly damaged; that’s why it was given a second wall, in which bullet holes are still visible.
Around the lighthouse are a few service houses that once sheltered the lighthouse keepers and their families. Climb the 153 steps to the top for stunning views over the North Sea and the Wadden Sea; on a clear day you can even see Vlieland.
Tickets for a visit are easy to buy online. And for those looking for something special: outside regular opening hours you can take part in an exciting escape game in and around the tower.
