Sterrebos Estate in Laag-Keppel is a beautiful example of an 18th-century star forest, established around 1750 on an old sand dune area north of Castle Keppel. Eight lanes symmetrically lead to the center of the forest: the Wrange Bult, also known as the Galgenbult. This hill once offered views of, among others, the church tower of Laag-Keppel and the castle.
Originally, the forest served as a hunting ground for the nobility, with the star-shaped layout allowing observation and driving of game from the center. After years of neglect, the Sterrebos was restored in 2016 with support from the province of Gelderland. The characteristic lane structure is now visible again, and the forest is a beloved spot for nature enthusiasts and cyclists.
The Sterrebos is freely accessible and connects to various cycling and walking routes in the Achterhoek. A visit to this historic forest offers a unique combination of nature, culture, and history.
