The Sternberg near Kleve is a historical and scenic highlight just across the border in Germany. This 86-metre-high artificial hill was built in the 17th century on the orders of Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen as part of the baroque Kleve gardens. From the top, you have a wonderful view of the Lower Rhine region, with sightlines reaching as far as Schwanenburg Castle and Moyland Castle.
The Sternberg is surrounded by forest and is part of several walking and cycling routes, including the picturesque ‘Kleverwald-Runde’. At the top, you will find a large lime tree with a bench around it – an ideal place to take a break during your bike ride. A visit to this piece of culture and nature is definitely worthwhile for anyone who loves history, panoramic views and a relaxing stopover.
