Olivier van Noort was the first Dutchman to sail around the world. After his voyage of discovery he was garrison commander in Schoonhoven from 1620 to 1627. Here he died in 1627. He was buried in the Grote Kerk and honoured at the Veerpoort, where his statue stands.
